About Visakhapatnam:
The name Visakhapatnam is a combination of two words – Visakha and Patnam. Patnam means a town in Telugu, the language of this region.
In ancient times, there was a temple on the beach in this area of Lord Siva, known as ‘Visakheswara’ (the Lord of Visakha). This area was named ‘Visakhapatnam’ after Shiva’s name. This ancient temple was discovered recently, a few kilometers away from the land submerged under the ocean.
Another noteworthy thing about the name of this town is, the Nakshatra (star constellation) under which Buddha was born is called ‘Visakha’ in Vedic Astrology.
May be for these reasons, Visakhapatnam is considered as a sacred place by both Yogis and Buddhists. There are many sacred Hindu temples as well as Buddhist Stupas in and around the city of Visakhapatnam. In recent times, great Enlightened Yogis and Masters such as Sri VenkataRama Yogi (Pakalapati Guruji), Sri Ekkirala Krishnamacharya (Master EK), Sri Kandukuri Sivananda Murti lived in and around Visakhapatnam.
